Dear Students, Parents and Colleagues,
In the months of February and March it has been very interesting. We have had a lot of changing weather. Due to the weather we have had early dismissals, late beginnings and even cancelled days. In spite of all of these delays, we have still been working hard.
In math the fifth grade have been working on all kinds of operations for decimals and fractions and trying to solve real world problems using fractions and decimals. We have reviewed Order of Operations, working with exponents and patterns. We have worked on problems dealing with area and perimeters.
In reading we have been reading different novels such as Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, The Hobbit and working on identifying themes, point of view, plot conflicts, setting and character development. We have been comparing and contrasting how a character might change. We have looked at protagonists and antagonists in the different novels that we have read.
In the fourth grade for math we have been working on finding equivalent fractions, changing improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice-versa. We have added and subtracted fractions with like denominators and have been looking at finding common denominators for unlike denominators in fractions. We have looked at angles, lines, and points. We have identified different types of angles and have looked at different geometric shapes and angles that make them up.
For reading we have been looking at settings or events in stories and referring back to the text to back up our reasons on why we think a character might feel a certain way by examining their thoughts, words or actions. We have been analyzing meanings of words as they are used in the context of a novel. We have examined different settings utilizing specific details in the text to determine how the setting might make a reader feel. We have read different novels such as Afternoon of the Elves and Bridge to Terabithia. We have also read some myths and examined the theme, conflict and moral of the story, while summarizing the myth. We have looked at protagonists and antagonists in the different novels that we have read.
We went on an exciting field trip in the month of March to Sci-Works. We went with another school, London Elementary. We did this so that the children here will get to know the children at London, especially the 5th graders who will be going to school together in the fall of 2014 to Southeastern. We had a great time learning about different science facts such as body health, sound, earth science including nature and examining the rock cycles. Along with exploring and looking at the above mentioned science concepts and others, we also looked at some different aspects of physical science and then got to view a planetarium show showing the night sky called Follow the Drinking Gourd. Afterwards we were able to have a nice lunch at Golden Corral.
