Dear Parents, September 15, 2013
I have had the pleasure of meeting and working with your children these past couple of weeks and have gotten to know some of their likes and dislikes and who they are. We have been working on place value, the standard and expanded form of writing out our whole numbers up to the million's place value. We had taken a pre-assessment in math and will be going over the strengths and weaknesses of our assessment and will continue to work on strengthening the weaknesses this nine weeks. We will be looking at multiplication and division of two and three digit number and start examining the place value of decimals in both fourth and fifth grade. The fifth graders have also been examining and revisiting factors/multiples of numbers.
The fourth and fifth graders have started to read a book called "Extra Credit" during our reading club.. We have also been reading articles of about 5 or 6 paragraphs while analyzing, generalizing, Inferring and looking at the literary elements, and discussing the themes of the articles in our reading groups. We will continue to We have also been going back to the text to provide evidence of our inferences and given reasons why the article has a certain theme.
Both of the grade levels have been looking and researching some to think about developing ideas of how to present a Rain Forest and Savannah Grasslands Biome, incorporating their math and language arts talents and skills. We will be looking at climate, plants, shrubs, trees, and animals to create a realistic looking habitat using our creative minds.
Thank you,
Alison Zdan
