Dear Parents, November 4, 2013
In London Elementary school the fourth grade have been working on patterns, multiplying by two digits, and estimating whole numbers and decimals. They have used the metric and customary measurement system , converting inches to feet to yards and back down again, while measuring the walls for the Rainforest and Grassland project. We have been working on scaled drawings while measuring our walls and have been reviewing patterns and looking at multiples. The fourth grade have begun to learn divisibility rules and will continue to use them in the month of November to continue to help them to find multiples, factors and learn how what numbers are divided by others.
In the fourth grade we have been reading the book "The River" by Gary Paulsen along with reading Extra Credit in our reading club. We have been discussing the different chapters in both books concentrating on making inferences based on the content read, making predictions and summarizing what we will and have been reading. We have also analyzed different characters in the books. From our reading club we have started an email pen pal activity where the children are writing to children in Israel.
In London Elementary school the fifth grade have been working on patterns, multiplying by three digits, estimating, using metric and customary measurement and converting inches to feet to yards and back down again, while measuring our walls for the rain forest and grassland project. We have also been working on scaled drawings while measuring our walls. We have been reviewing patterns, looking at multiples and factors of numbers. We have been looking at multiplying by the 100's place and discussing exponents and powers. We have examined place value of decimals while rounding and estimating them. We have also examined divisibility rules and used them to identify prime vs. composite numbers.
The fifth grade is currently reading the book "A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'engle" along with reading Extra Credit in our reading club. We have been discussing the different chapters in both books concentrating on inference, predictions and summarizing what we have been reading. We have also analyzed different characters in the books. From our reading club we have started an email pen pal activity where the children are writing to students in Israel.
